https://www.legendsconofficial.com A Brief Summary of the First (Unofficial, Fan-led) Star Wars Expanded Universe Convention, The Sabotage that Followed, And the Winning Lawsuit that Proved the Truth
What is LegendsCon? LegendsCon is an independent, fan-run convention launched by Legends Consortium to celebrate the Star Wars Expanded Universe (books, comics, and games) now designated as Star Wars Legends. The inaugural event took place on September 9–10, 2023, in Burbank, California, featuring notable EU authors and creators, while raising charity proceeds for the Peter Mayhew Foundation. The list of guests included:
LegendsCon II
After the considerable success of this event, a second convention was planned
with the following guests confirmed for March 15-16, 2025, with proceeds
intended for the Twin Suns Foundation:
Sabotage Unfortunately , a group of former volunteers and coordinators that were dismissed from Legends Consortium broke away from the original organization in order to form a rival entity called Legends Enclave. Using internal access and proprietary knowledge gained while volunteering for the original team, the defecting volunteers deliberately scheduled a competing convention at the exact same venue where the official LegendsCon had been organized. They actively sabotaged the planning of the official LegendsCon follow-up event, slandered the owner and other volunteers, and manipulated fans and authors into believing that they were the injured party and rightful owners of the LegendsCon brand, all while illegally using the protected LEGENDSCON registered trademark, logos, and branding to market their own competing event under a nearly identical banner to the same niche demographic, confusing fans and dividing ticket sales, which contributed to the steep decline in sales that eventually forced the cancellation of the official convention.
Left with no choice after months of trying to achieve an amicable solution, owner and CEO of Legends Consortium LLC, Kyle Rawlings, was forced to hire an attorney who gathered the evidence and brought about the following charges (amongst others):
* False Designation of Origin * Federal Trademark Infringement * Intentional Interference with Prospective Economic Advantage * Violation of California Business and Professions Code 17200
The Lawsuit (Legends Consortium LLC v. Legends Enclave)
In response to repeated attempts on the part of the attorney to get Legends Enclave to cease and desist their unauthorized event and respond to the charges of intellectual property theft, Kyle Rawlings, representing Legends Consortium LLC, filed a federal lawsuit against the defecting group in the Central District of California. The action was brought forth by Omni Legal Group. [1, 2, 3]
Because
the agents of Legends Enclave failed to appear, plead, or legally defend
their actions in court, a default judgment was made. [1] The Ruling and Outcome On November 7, 2025, U.S. District Judge R. Gary Klausner ruled entirely in favor of Kyle Rawlings and Legends Consortium LLC. The court order enacted strict penalties against the agents of Legends Enclave, as shown here:
In summary: The defendants were found liable for creating explicit consumer confusion by marketing their breakaway event under the "LegendsCon" event banner, intentionally leading fans into believing it was the official sequel convention and authorized by the original creators of LegendsCon.The agents of Legends Enclave were found guilty of unlawfully registering and utilizing confusingly similar domain names and social media handles to siphon internet traffic and ticket inquiries away from the official convention. The court ruled that the defendents engaged in deceptive, dishonest business practices specifically designed to injure the economic viability and public goodwill of Legends Consortium LLC. Alongside the federal violations, Legends Enclave was held liable under California state laws for the unauthorized and unlawful exploitation of protected event branding to capture a niche demographic. · Legends Enclave and all of its officers, agents, and affiliated volunteers were permanently banned from using the "LEGENDSCON" trademark or any confusingly similar names for any future business, convention, or marketing purposes.
· Monetary Damages: The court awarded $80,000 in monetary damages directly to Legends Consortium LLC.
· Legal Fees: The defendants were ordered to pay all of the plaintiff's reasonable attorney fees and associated legal costs, totally to $17,796.25. Following the lengthy, year-long legal battle, Rawlings issued an official update to the Expanded Universe community expressing relief that the judgment had finally cleared his name and protected the event's legacy, allowing the team to refocus on the community. I n regards to the successful win, Kyle had this to say: "Today, after a very, very long year, I am pleased to share that I can now give more of my attention to this community. Alas, there is an important update from Legends Consortium LLC to share with you today. Please understand that I will not be taking questions on the matter at hand in this video, as that would not be prudent. Much love to all of you for your endless support and passion for SE and this community as a whole. Cheers!"
