12/31/21 HAPPY NEW YEAR!! I just finished the final draft of the book!! Tonight, as the ball drops and we reflect on the past year and the coming one, I want you all to know how much I appreciate you! None of this could've happened without your support, love, and patience! Every year is a mixture of light and darkness. Every year brings challenges, opportunities to learn and grow, disappointments, and, occasionally, moments of joy, love, and peace. And because it’s this that helps carry us past the dark times, we focus on the positive because we must. Now following the holiday, I'll send out for a proof copy. That just means a physical copy of the book. Once it arrives, I'll give it a reread just to catch any stray typos. With the aid of my trusty editors, who've gone over everything, there shouldn't be much, so this should be a relatively quick process. After that, I'll do two separate layouts for the trade paperback and hardcover (which I think is going to be larger in size) and begin adding the illustrations and maps to both versions. Then, I'll send out for another proof copy of each just to be sure it all sits on the page properly. If it does, then I begin mailing out books to contributors! I'll continue doing bi-monthly updates so that we're still in touch during this process, and I'll be reaching out to those of you for whom I don't yet have addresses. Have a wonderful and safe New Year! Joe
12/15/21 You Win Some and you Lose Some... Hey guys, It's update-time! So, I've got some good news and some bad news to talk about before I get into the update itself. Let's start with the bad. Wookieepedia has apparently ruled
that Cult Encounters and Supernatural Encounters won't be included
on their site and are currently pulling down all the articles that referenced
them. I just learned this today, so I don't know if they're going to pull the
many articles that were also labeled as questionable canonicity, but this is the
approach they've taken to SE. No one from that organization ever reached out to
me for clarification or to ask questions. It's not unreasonable that fans think it's the former. That's how it was for Tom Veitch and Tim Zahn in 1990. But it hasn't been like that for a long, long time. Frankly, I wish it was. It would have helped weed out a lot of the contradictions that came through over the years. But it's not. Of course, Wookieepedia is free to adopt whatever policies they want, but an approach based on misinformation is not the wisest course when a simple fact-check or conversation with me would have set matters straight. I'm disappointed, of course, but my sole concern has to be on the quality of this project. With that in mind... Now the good news: Nick Joseph--who played Arhul Hextrophon in Episode IV: A New Hope--reached out to me! Not only will he be getting a copy of the book, but he wants to be involved in the audio-drama in some capacity. In that regard, I leave that to the capable hands of the great Kyle Rawlings, who’s in charge of that project. In any case, it's quite exciting and humbling! As to the update itself, I have surpassed page 1,000! (Just a tiny bit of clarification: this is still unformatted and double-spaced. I use these page numbers so that we're all on the same page. It's not a final page count.) So, I'm almost there! A lot of the material that follows the next big Sith chapters have already been edited by me. So, what we have seen lately? A look at Xendor and the First Jedi Schism The Return of Belot The Infinite Empire, the Infernal Empire, and the Mother Machines Tunit The Croke The Statue of Korman Lao The Sorcerers of Rhand Ok, that's it for now! I hope everyone has a fantastic Hanukkah and Christmas! Be safe, be sound, be joyful! I'll see you guys soon on January 1st, at which point I believe I'll be telling you it's done and that I'm either doing the layout or awaiting a physical proof copy! Cheers! 11/30/21 Update Time! It's time for our bi-monthly day update!
I've hit page 905. A bit over 200 pages to go!
When last we left off, a great warrior departs Roon; two of the Old Ones meet their end; Elegast welcomes to his world a beautiful and mysterious stranger who brings balance to a family teetering on the edge. But the Shamaness is not pleased! Elsewhere, the dark truth of a lost past is revealed. A shard of the Shadowstone breaks off, causing problems to all who wield it. Morag's spell goes awry, leading to the abduction of Logray and the death of an Ewok. A visit to Odra and Stagorr do not go as planned. And Latara embarks on a solo mission to find out what happened to Teebo. Coming up: A Sacred Princess fights. A Force Demon finds himself imprisoned. And a strange world is discovered by the Sith during a civil war.
See you again on Dec 15th for the next update!
11/15/21 Update Time! Hey Everyone! Hope you're all doing well!
So, despite the chaos of this past week--which I hope has been finally resolved (see my 11/10 post)--I managed to get a nice chunk of work on SE done. I'm not page 805 and counting! We have entered the Great Black Nest at the start of the Twilight Wars. We have seen Lord Soros transformed into the Night Herald, and the Ssither routed from Dromencas! And we have embarked on the journey of Moragarom, Stagorr, and Odra on Lesser Tana!
A little over 300 pages to go! I'll you guys again for another update on 11/30!
11/10/21 SE Controversy! Hey guys, so the recent controversy made me want to lay this matter of SE's canonicity to rest by providing the evidence that SE was licensed and approved, and that I was given time to continue developing it. Some background first. A recent post from Pablo Hidalgo stating that Supernatural Encounters "hasn't gone through any of the editorial channels here" has caused some to question its status and accuse me of having deceived fans on this matter. Many of you have come to my defense, and in a civil manner, which I appreciate! It's a weird thing to be accused of lying by people who don't know you or the situation, but I don't take it personally. We live in a culture that tends to encourage quick judgments based on scant or misinterpreted information. I'm sure I've done it myself. But it's important to set the record straight, so I'm releasing the business emails that transpired between Lucasfilm and me so that you can see for yourself and we can put this matter to bed once and for all. I resisted doing this for a time because it seemed unprofessional, but given the circumstances, I think it's fine. (It's on the Discord server, which you're all welcome to join--drop me an email at thesithempire@msn.com and I'll send you an invite). I also want to take this moment to talk about the idea of canon in fiction. Just because a story is licensed and approved doesn't mean you have to accept it into your personal views of what the larger story is. Even hardcore fans reject a variety of officially approved stories, be that the Ewoks animated series, Dark Empire, or the 2013 Brian Wood series. And that's fine. Ultimately you are in charge of your head-canon, and in this post-Disney SW era, in which LFL has rendered the entire Expanded Universe as noncanonical, it really is up to you to decide what is and isn't Star Wars. So, if SE doesn't work for you, you're not beholden to it. Conversely, if SWTheory's excellent Vader fan films (or any unlicensed story) fits your head-canon, go with it! You don't need the approval of an authority figure to accept or reject a story in your personal vision. There's more we can discuss on these matters, but for now I should return to finishing this final draft! But if anyone has any additional questions or concerns, don't hesitate to reach out to me on Facebook, or by email (thesithempire@msn.com). I always have and always will be honest and upfront with you guys about Star Wars and everything under the sun! Cheers!
11/1/21 SE Update SE Update: I'm on page 708 of the final edit. This is Chapter 52: Horliss-Horliss Throws a Shape, and deals with the breaking of the Battalions on Coruscant when the offspring of Typhojem invades, which is one of the final battles of the War of Temporal Planes. Then, I'll be going into Book V, which deals with the Twilight Wars and the weird and nebulous period that leads up to it. Book V is also interesting in that it's both very Sith-heavy and Endor-heavy. So, something for everyone!
10/24/21 Dawn of the Jedi: Detailed Chronological Breakdown Special thanks to Matt Jones for re-reading and rehauling the entire Dawn of the Jedi series! Finally, we have a proper and organized chronology, delineated by flashbacks and frame stories! I'm so thrilled that I've posted Matt's research here for everyone to see in case future questions arise. That link will also be included in the first entry of Dawn of the Jedi on the timeline!
10/9/21 The Dread Pirate Xim & the Treasure of Darth Hevel I'm thrilled to announce that the follow-up sequel to my friend Michael K. Brennan's highly acclaimed work, The Godform Assumption of StarCrow the Wise, is now up and available on PDF for free for fans to enjoy!! It's called The Dread Pirate Xim & the Treasure of Darth Hevel and you can check it out here!
10/5/21 Site Update and SE Update HUGE thank you to Matt Jones for going over this timeline with a fine-tooth comb and correcting all kinds of mistakes! Matt, you're proofreading skills are amazing! All of you guys who've helped improve this site are absolute gems! I couldn't maintain this without you! Still a lot of changes to make in the coming years, some stylistic ones, some detailed breakdowns, but together we'll get there!
I know some of you would like to me list all the changes, but there were too many to list (and most were mistakes as opposed to chronology shifts).
In SE news, I'm on page 575 of the final draft and trucking along after a two-week long family emergency involving a senior catahoula (which had a happy ending)! Life throws curves; you have to roll with them.
9/5/21 Site and SE Update I'm about halfway through the final draft of the extended Supernatural Encounters. Expect a new chronology of chapters in the coming weeks! I'm working towards release by the end of the year! Physical copies will be sent out first before I release the online version.
In site news, thank you to David Koziol for helping with the Rebel Force six-book series! Not only did I have a title that didn't exist ("Ambush"--maybe it was a working title at one point?), but I was missing the sixth book in the series! All fixed now! :D
8/14/21 Site Update There's a slight story in Wicket's World Coloring Book, a Kenner book from 1983, which I never knew about, and have added to 2 ABY. I have another Ewoks coloring book headed my way, which should have another similar story.
8/8/21 Site Update Thanks to Ben Wilder for providing me the necessary paperback equivalent of the breakdown in Darth Plagueis.
8/1/21 SE Update Hey guys! One of my contributors (Jesse) reminded me that I'm supposed to give you an update with new art today! I'm proofing Chapter 23 of the next-to-final draft. These last few chapters were a bit challenging (in a good way), so they took a bit longer. The goal is ensure that they read properly and artfully. Some writers focus on the one to the detriment of the other, but I'm a little old school in that I think both can and should be employed. In any case, I'm hoping to make even better progress this week! So, what about the illustration? Well, I'm not giving you any context this time (not even in the title) as I think it's more fun to try and figure it out! Click on the thumbnail and enjoy!
7/25/21 Site Update I added the 1986 Ewoks on Ice story: Ewoks and the Magic Sunberries. Unfortunately, I haven't recovered a program or script, but the basic idea appears to be attached to the time period of the first season of the animated series or thereabouts, for which reason I placed it in 2 ABY.
6/18/21 Droids Arrives on Disney+ to NO fanfare! Some good news for old-school EU fans: Star Wars Droids is now up on Disney+. I don't know why this hasn't been properly promoted. There's not a single official announcement (not even Kristen Baver mentioned it on her show, and she spoke at length about the forthcoming series, Visions). And I barely see it registering on fan sites. It's as if LFL is determined to bury everything that came out before 2014 that isn't the films. It's really sad to see them disavowing this older material. If you have Disney+, show them that "we care" about the EU and older series, watch it, talk about it! And when you watch it, remember that "The Great Heep" episodes (listed as Season 2) takes place between episodes 9 and 10! And since, they're not interested in celebrating this release after so many years, I will. To celebrate it, I've released the lost "Droids: Re-Animated, Parts 1 & 2," by Rich Handley and Abel Pena! You can find that here (and on the right-hand side of the page)! 6/7/21 Skyewalkers is now here! Anyone searching for Abel Pena's Skyewalkers can now find it here! Enjoy!
6/6/21 Site Update Thanks to Ryan Winters for the corrected 980 BBY date for Darth Bane: Dynasty of Evil!
6/2/21 Site Update Want to thank Danni Scarpa for some updates to the 32 BBY period, which can be a bit tricky, but he's figured out a good solution!
5/9/21 Site Update I added the new Star Wars Insider Fiction Collection to the stories collected in Volume1. Hope you guys have picked that one up, as it will encourage Titan Magazine and LFL to continue to bring us more of these gorgeous collections of short stories from the pages of the Insider magazine. Vol 2 is scheduled for Sept 28, 2021, and will also mix EU and Disney content. This first volume covered 19 stories across five years, from 2011 to 2017. Six from 2011, six from 2012, one from 2013, two from 2014, two from 2015, one from 2016, and one from 2017. In other words, 13 EU and 6 DU. The Insider had stopped publishing new fiction for a time during the early years of the Disney continuity, so there's less of a pool of those to draw from, which they'll probably space out as they continue a similar ration of DU to EU stories . Overall, I think it's a great strategy. I know purists are annoyed by the inclusion of DU stories and the Legends banner, and I understand, but I hope you won't let it hurt the cause. The cause is to get LFL to release more EU (old and new). And look, if it gets fans of the new continuity to read the older stories and come onboard the EU bandwagon, then that's a great thing! (And for those of us who accept any Disney canon story that fits into the EU, it's also a win.) This project is something to celebrate, as many of us have wanted to get these stories collected for a long time.
Final piece of news: it looks like Heart of the Jedi has been pulled. I don't know if this is something the person who published it did on his own, or if Disney asked Amazon to take it down, but it had a good run! And the sales numbers it achieved during that short run were amazing! For those of you who missed it, I am sorry, but take heart (no pun intended), The Heart of the Jedi will always be available to read on my site for as long I live!
Also, I finally remembered to add a link (on the left) to the Twin Suns Foundation, who are a fantastic group of volunteers who donate books to kids, promote reading and writing, run fundraisers, and put up billboards to not only encourage literacy, but spread the word of the Star Wars Expanded Universe! They welcome donations and volunteers, really, anything you can do to be part of something good!
5/8/21 Site Update Thanks to Ryan Winters for the dating of The Bad Batch. As with other post-Disney series, so long as it can reasonably fit into the EU, it'll included. For those of you who aren't interested in anything post-Disney, stick to the individual eras, which will remain free from of Disney-era continuity.
5/7/21 Site Update Thanks to Ryan Winters for the flashback reference in Knight Errant: Aflame #2, which takes place in 1042 BBY!
5/4/21 Supernatural May the 4th! Happy May the 4th!! Here's a glimpse of a work-in-progress by our new artist Guillaume Ducos on Supernatural Encounters. For forty-four years, we've heard only hushed whispers of them... their very existence was said to be a myth. Darth Vader swore by them... caliginous cults called out to them... Bogan and the Father of Shadows and the Ancient Ones... and yet who or what or how many they were remained unknown, with only the darkest hints and rumors emerging in the years since...
Until now... When Arhul Hextrophon uncovers the most terrifying truth the galaxy has ever known... Imprisoned for millennia in the black heart of the Unknown Regions, they are nearing the time of their return... When the nine thrones have been filled... then the seals shall be broken... And the Immortal Gods of the Sith will rise again!
5/3/21 Site Update and Heart of the Jedi Update First off, thanks to Ryan Winters for reminded me to add Lost Tribe: Pandemonium to 2975 BBY! And for pointing out that there are five issues of Spiral (not four)!
Second, as to the appearance of the formerly lost novel, Heart of the Jedi, by Kenneth C. Flint, that I published here in 2015, and which has recently appeared in paperback on Amazon--while I had nothing to do with the latter--I'm glad it's available for collectors and being offered AT COST--which is the only appropriate way to do it. I don't know how long it will remain for sale, so grab it while you can.
4/22/21 Site Update Thanks to Ryan Winters for helping me update the The Old Republic chronology in 3639-3638 BBY!
4/14/21 Site Update Several of you sent me word that SWTor.com has a new short story, "Quite a Story to Tell." Thanks guys, and thanks to Kyle for informing me that it takes place in 3627 BBY. Also, thanks to Pete Hale, I added the test footage for the cancelled TV series Underworld in 8 BBY (which is just a guesstimate at this point).
4/13/21 Ewoks I've decided to move the two Ewoks films, Caravan of Courage and the Battle for Endor to after Return of the Jedi (technically after the Alliance leaves Endor in the Marvel series). It's never made sense to me to have it take place earlier. Not only does Cindel teach Wicket Basic, but the whole attitude of the tribe is protective towards the Humans, not skeptical or hostile, as with the way Han, Luke, and Leia were treated by them. Also, the Marauders do quite a bit of damage to Bright Tree Village. That couldn't have been fixed overnight. Placing it after the animated series also eliminates the issue of Choka-Trok's death at the end of Caravan of Courage. Of course, if anyone can think of any reason that it shouldn't be post-ROTJ (besides "Because Lucasfilm said so"), let me know! ;)
Site news: I added the trailers for the cancelled Lucasarts game 1313--thanks to Pete Hale!
4/12/21 Site Update Thanks to Quinlan Vos for his help with Star Wars Mythos, which I'd completely overlooked! All six shorts (and their backup links) are on the timeline now in their respective places! I've also been shuffling around Ewoks stories to better reflect their prospective seasonal cues (often explicit in the books).
4/10/21 Site Update and New Art Coming As I'm going through the Ewoks episodes again (now that they're on Disney+), I'm rearranging the episodes to reflect the information present in the episodes. For example, Teebo is training under Logray in S1, episode 7's "Curse of the Jindas," but hasn't even started that process until episode 9's "Sunstar vs. Shadowstone," a few episodes later. A comet is seen in the sky at the end of Season 1's "Land of the Gupins," but this isn't resolved until Season 2's "Night of the Stranger," which would place those episodes back-to-back. "The Haunted Village" has the Duloks wishing for soap they could use to stave off insects. In "The Cries of the Trees," which aired prior, they get that relief from Morag.
As to new art, SE now has a second artist onboard! I'll update this page with a sample of new work when I have the first one in hand!
4/1/21 SE Update! Hey guys, with winter's end upon us, it's time for an update on Supernatural Encounters! With the help of my amazing editors and proofreaders, I've finished another draft and begun editing the endnotes (which needed some attention). Once those are done, I'll create a physical proof with which, I'll go over what will essentially be the last draft. By then, I expect to have the final illustration and map (both of which are being worked on as we speak) and can begin the layout process. Upon completion, I'll order another proof copy and go over everything for the last time to make sure it's 100%. Then, I start shipping out contributor copies... and prepare the web version and PDF. So, we're getting there! I want to thank all of you for your incredible patience! Everyone on my team has been working night and day to get this done right. The truth is: Continuity is not for wimps! Of course, the journey doesn't end with SE. We have the German Ewoks stories coming for the first time in English (expect that in late Spring/early Summer), to be followed, at long last, by English translations of the four Hungarian Han Solo books (potentially by year's end)! (This recovered image appears to be a fragment of a much larger piece--I can only imagine what he's looking at, just out of frame...)
3/14/21 Site Update I added Jedi Temple Challenge to the post-TPM period... Why? Because it easily fits in the Expanded Universe; because Ahmed Best is great; and because it's a cute "in-universe" kids show with short stories embedded in each of the ten episodes (it would be nice if LFL published those, actually). Perhaps more controversially, I also added Star Wars Theory's Vader fan-films. Why? Because the quality's great, the story fits the EU, and creator Danny Ramirez is someone who genuinely loves and understands Star Wars. I know some of you may balk at the inclusion of one or both, and that's totally fine; you're free to ignore any or all of the above. From my perspective, Star Wars is best when it grows and has a sense of fun. There is no governing body overseeing the Expanded Universe--which is now basically a stalled universe in the sense that there is no new material being produced apart from what few unpublished stories I can dig up from the past [and there's quite a bit of that coming your way this year, from Supernatural Encounters to the Hungarian Han Solo books to the German Ewoks]. So, really, it's us--the fans--who are the governing body as to what is and isn't canon. And that's no bad thing. Thus, I see far more positive than negative in adding to this timeline a fan-film that I think is excellent and beloved by so many. Your mileage may vary (and there's no judgment there), for which reason I've kept the individual eras for strict pre-2014 EU canon. The point of this is simply to say that there's a place in Star Wars for fans of all stripes... and Star Wars stories of all stripes. But this is the start of a conversation, not the culmination of one, and a conversation we'll revisit again in the months ahead....
3/4/21 More Ewoks and More Updates... I updated the Ewoks and Droids comics to include the extra titles for their 2nd and sometimes 3d parts. I also added the German Ewoks magazines and paperbacks. I've got one more translation coming and then it's done. Special Thanks to Thomas Rathausky for that! As soon as I've given that an edit, I'll release them together online here. There's five issues in total and they're quite good!
As far as Supernatural Encounters is concerned, I anticipate producing a physical proof copy on which to do a final edit some time by month's end. The artist is working on the final illustration, which I expect to have in hand in another month's time, at which I'll begin the layout. Then, I'll order another proof copy--and, if it's perfect--begin sending them out physical copies to contributors and then put it online for the public!
I'll keep you all informed as we move along each step of the process.
P.S. Han Solo fans--translations of the four Hungarian Han Solo books are continuing!
2/27/21 E...E...E...E...E...E...Ewoks JaajJeej made a good suggestion to move the Ewoks Season 1 to before The Empire Strikes Back to demonstrate their growth and changes between the first two seasons. It makes sense. I also put the young readers Ewoks mini-books a year before that. I've been rereading the comics of late in order to better place the forthcoming German translations. Good stuff!
2/26/21 Site Update Thanks to Michael Vassallo for pointing out that I was missing the first chapter of Jedi Quest: Path to Truth and the first RPG stories from Star Wars Adventures Magazine (which are adaptations of Obi-Wan's story from Kamino to Geonosis in Episode II).
2/10/21 Site Update Thanks to Ryan Winter for updates on TOR: Knights of the Eternal Throne, updates 6.0-6.2.
Also, thanks to JaajJeej for providing info on the Star Tours: The Adventure Continues simulator ride theme park attraction, which I added to 3-1 months BBY. His reasoning for the breakdown is as follows:
Opening Queue and Boarding Pre-show Spaceport Sequence: Millennium Falcon version (before the speeder leaves the spaceport) Spaceport Sequence: Darth Vader version Spaceport Sequence: Millennium Falcon version (rest of the version, ending with the ship entering hyperspace is also a part of the Vader version) Hoth (likely the first planet given the intro--also likely the same battle from Rebel Assault--this should be considered non-canon as Hoth was not known until Luke discovered it in "Iceworld" from the Star Wars newspaper strips) Ackbar Message (this is apparently the first message they receive, although 3PO is surprised by all of them so its possible to put all 3 messages following Kahsyyyk) Coruscant (to fit with Tatooine leading into Tatooine Trader) Tatooine (seems to be the first time the ship gets into a chase, so before Kashyyyk) Tatooine Trader (apparently its a store at Disney right after the ride, but its modeled to be in universe. Must be after they receive one of the messages) Yoda Message Kashyyyk (last planet before they receive the final message) Leia Message Geonosis/Death Star (final encounter with the empire, scenes before the ship gets to hyperspace only) Naboo (the glass brakes at the end, so it must be after all other planets) Geonosis/Death Star final scene (finale of the ride with the ship finding Home One) The Star Trader (another Disney store around the ride)
1/30/21 Site Update More fine-tuning on Republic Heroes (thanks to Noam) as mentioned below. I also added Star Wars: The Interactive Video Board Game (Assault on the Death Star), which featured David Prowse and James Earl Jones reprising their role for a story that takes place right before Return of the Jedi. I'm not sure how the continuity would work (since Death Star II's laser was supposed to be inoperable, but maybe that's what the Rebel infiltrators end up doing?). In either case, it's in-continuity as Abel Pena referenced the events of it in his Dark Forces Saga RPG articles.
1/29/21 Site Update Thanks to Noam Nederby Jessen for helping me fine-tune the placement of the various missions in the Republic Heroes DS version!
1/25/21 Site Update Thanks to Vaughn Everlast (and earlier Alex Payne) for pointing out that episodes 4 and 5 of TCW Season 4 were in the wrong place on the Clone Wars Viewing Order. It's been fixed!
1/21/21 Site Update Thanks again to JaajJeej for an update on the Clone Wars: Republic Heroes video games. Apparently, the DS and PSP versions are different. Also, their missions have now been properly put in their respective locations where they take place!
Thanks to Eddie van der Heijden, I updated the links to all the vanished in-universe Hyperpace articles. While I was at it, I also added links to the author's cut of The Essential Guide to Warfare.
1/18/21 Site Update Thanks to JaajJeej, I added the Vector Prime commercial, which has a voiceover of Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker discussing, in-brief, the events that occurred in that book, which, therefore, makes it in-universe. Coming soon will be the Living Force campaign RPGs, which Mark Thons provided!
1/17/21 Meaning in Words The words that the Loth-Wolf Dume says to young Jedi Ezra Bridger in the fourth and final season of Rebels, and the implications of it in that eleventh episode of the same name, has meaning for Star Wars fans that I believe we'll see come to pass this year, likely from the forthcoming live-action series by Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau... but for those of you who are less hopeful, this phrase, "Restore the past, Redeem the future" has additional meanings that do not depend on the powers-that-be at Lucasfilm to fulfill. We'll discuss these things and more in the year ahead. Stay tuned.
1/8/21 More EU on the Way! Five previously unknown (to most) exclusive Ewoks prose stories have been discovered and are being translated for the first time into English by a friend. I just edited the first one. What's fascinating is that it's a sequel to issue #4 of the Ewoks comic-book series! Stay tuned for more info and details to come!
